Question: i have recently started wearing invisalign braces and have noticed a few ulcers popping up here and there, i’ve been using bonjela but it has really be that effective what would you recommend and am I at risk of developing an abscess? thank you

Answer:

During the first few weeks of Invisalign we commonly see small ulcers develop usually on the insides of the lips. They are usually caused by the edges of the aligner rubbing slightly. After stage 3 or 4 this tends to go away. I sometimes recommend using a nail file to very gently smooth the edge of an aligner if a sharp edge is present. Please consult your invisalign doctor before doing this though. You are not at a higher risk of developing a dental abscess from these minor ulcers. The 2 are quite different. I hope this is useful.
